Nestled in the heart of the San Juan River basin, Los Guatuzos Wildlife Refuge is one of Nicaragua’s most remarkable natural treasures. This sprawling protected area, covering 437.5 km², is home to an incredible diversity of flora and fauna, making it an essential destination for nature lovers and researchers alike. Recognized as Nicaragua’s only internationally registered tropical wetland, Los Guatuzos is part of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance and is cataloged as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
Tropical Wetlands and Rainforest
This unique refuge is comprised of a rich tapestry of tropical wetlands, rainforests, and marshes. Los Guatuzos is a thriving ecosystem with a complex network of 12 rivers winding through the reserve, offering vital water sources for countless plant and animal species. Incredible Wildlife
