Heirloom Vegetable Seeds

“Might I,” quavered Mary, “might I have a bit of earth?” “Earth!” he repeated. “What do you mean?” “To plant seeds in — to make things grow — to see them come alive.” — Frances H. Burnett, The Secret Garden

Successfully growing organic vegetables in the jungle requires experimenting with multiple varieties. For example, planting ten different cucumber varieties allows the insect population to favor some while leaving others relatively untouched. It’s more effective to plant a variety of crops and sacrifice 5% to 20% to insects than to frequently spray with organic insecticide solutions, such as a mix of soap, cayenne pepper, vinegar, and water. However, finding a diverse selection of heirloom vegetable seeds in Nicaragua can be challenging.

If you’d like to support our efforts, please consider sending us a gift of heirloom vegetable seeds. Your contribution will help us identify which varieties best adapt to the tropical climate, allowing us to save and store seeds for future planting seasons.
